Flint Sparks stands as a beacon at the intersection of two seemingly opposing fields, wielding over four decades of experience as both a Zen teacher and a licensed psychologist. His journey into these intertwined realms began with a deep curiosity about the human mind and the pursuit of inner peace—a quest that continues to resonate profoundly in his teachings and therapeutic approach.

Flint’s academic training began with graduate degrees in both biology and psychology. He has extensive postdoctoral training in mindfulness-based psychotherapies and group therapy, with specialty training in both the Hakomi Method and Internal Family Systems Model. His traditional Zen training began at the San Francisco Zen Center, and continued at the Austin Zen Center, which he founded and nourished in its early years. Currently, he is a resident teacher at Appamada, a center for Zen practice and inquiry in Austin, Texas.

His dual expertise in Zen and psychology uniquely positions him to offer holistic and transformative approaches to our everyday challenges, our mental health, and our plans for the future. In this episode (a throwback from last August—in case you missed it) we talk about some foundational concepts that might fill in some gaps for everyone: things like healing a heavy heart, fostering less friction in relationships, and finding resilience in situations that are beyond our control.
