All Aboard! Hot Mess Express Cleans Homes for A Fresh Start

Do you ever feel like you just need a reset? We’ve all been there. You’ve had a busy couple of weeks and the laundry is piling up, the floors are covered in crumbs, the lawn needs mowing, and the dishes—AHHH THE DREADED SINK FULL OF DIRTY DISHES! Nothing amplifies one’s anxiety quicker than a cluttered living space. So what do you do when you’re desperately in need of a clean slate but you can’t catch up? That’s where an army of volunteer Moms march in ready to save the day!

Armed with cleaning supplies, empathy, and a whole lotta love, the women-led nonprofit Hot Mess Express is sweeping away the stigma that comes with asking for help when you really need it.

It takes a village.

Women take on a lot of responsibilities at home, at work…in life, in general. In fact, studies show that women take on more than half of the responsibilities at home. Whether it’s cleaning, taking care of children, preparing meals, keeping up with bills, arranging appointments 1…the list goes on, and often feels like it won’t end! The burden of this neverending to-do list can take its toll physically and emotionally, leading to burnout and even a weakened immune system. 2

But here’s the thing, no matter how overloaded women become, it’s highly unlikely that they will ask for the help they need. Oftentimes it’s a mix of pride, shame, and societal pressures that hold them back from seeking assistance. But more often than not, it’s based on not wanting to burden their loved ones by asking for a favor.

The founders of Hot Mess Express, being caregivers themselves, recognized this pattern and sought to put an end to that fear of being judged. Their team of volunteers can relate, and that superhuman sense of empathy is the foundation that their sisterhood is built upon.

Not a handout—just a hand.

Can you imagine a world where asking for help was no big deal? Sounds refreshing doesn’t it? That sigh of relief is exactly what these volunteers are chasing.

Here’s how it works. You hop on over to the Hot Mess Express website, and from there you can volunteer your time as a “Chaos Coordinator” or you can nominate someone for a “Rescue Mission”. By the way, you can totally nominate yourself! And, they don’t discriminate based on your parental status. These ladies know that sometimes even women without children also need a hand when life gets overwhelming.

“The purpose of Hot Mess Express is to create an environment where women feel safe and they feel heard, and they feel that they are not being judged and that they can be honest and open.” — Volunteer Cleaner for Hot Mess Express

Watch the inspiring video below to see how much of a difference these women can make in just one day. In this short documentary by Mullins Media, we get to see an energetic group of HME volunteers help a single foster mom by offering a fresh start. Check it out to see the before and after!

Bring on the happy tears! How can you not feel all warm and fuzzy inside after seeing women support each other in such a helpful and compassionate fashion? Their work embodies the very definition of heartwarming.

How you can hop aboard the Hot Mess Express!

As of August 2024, Hot Mess Express has completed over 200 rescue missions! They have chapters in almost every state in the United States. Click here to view their directory and see if there is a chapter near you. If you don’t see a chapter in your state, you can always start one!

You can also request to join their private Facebook group to connect with other volunteers and share resources.

If you want to support their work but have more funds than spare time, you can also donate to their non-profit. Sometimes they even have special merch for sale that benefits their cause!

And lastly but certainly not least, there is always the option to help on a smaller scale that is more central to the people in your own life. It costs nothing to lend a helping hand to someone you know that may be struggling. And remember—for the reasons mentioned above—they might not accept your offer at first. So maybe check in with them again a little later. Some folks just aren’t used to accepting help when they are so used to doing everything on their own. That little reminder that you are here to help could be the most comforting thing they hear all month.

Perhaps your kind offer will even allow them a bit of extra time to consider how they could be helping others. And that ripple effect of love and kindness will continue to expand. I guarantee it!

Women are powerhouses when it comes to banding together to get things done.

When we join forces we are limitless. So if you are a champion for positive change, in any form, get your girls together and make it happen! Together we can transform lives, and in the process, ourselves.

“If women don’t realize what’s going on in the world, they won’t step in and fix it. But if they do… women will fix it. And accessorize it!” –The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
