Got a Window? Charge Your Phone with this Tiny Solar Panel

How many times have you thought to yourself “I am not doing enough”? Whether we’re talking about saving the planet, voting, passing knowledge down to younger generations…or really anything we feel passionate about…we’ve all been at a point in life where we felt like our actions were too small to make a difference. Today, I’m here to reassure you that your actions do make a difference, and why those little steps actually lead to monumental progress.

Are you ready to debunk this “I don’t matter” myth that we have been telling ourselves? All you need to start with is a sunny window and an open mind.

What if every person in our world decided on a single habit that they could improve on?

Mathematically, it is impossible that this wouldn’t add up to something amazing!

Product and industrial designer, Krystal Persaud, struck upon this realization when she realized how few people had access to solar energy. Using her particular set of tech engineering skills, she vowed to design a product that would allow people all around the globe to channel solar power; all by simply having a window in their living space.

But this isn’t any ol’ ugly solar panel…

One of the best things about doing something that’s never been done before is that you have a blank canvas to start with. Krystal wanted to design something that would not only be functional and beautiful (after all, it’s going in peoples’ homes so it has to look nice!), but from it’s very conception, she wanted to design it with sustainability in mind. Grouphug’s tablet-sized solar chargers are made from earth-friendly bamboo, very little plastic (plastic is a huge problem in tech waste), and the batteries can even be replaced!

This short video by Goodful gives us a closer look at the creation of Grouphug’s window solar panel charger and its brilliant design. I dare you not be inspired by Krystal’s story!

Want a solar charger for yourself? You can buy one for around $140 (US dollars) on their website. They are great for those living in apartments or tiny homes. And the beauty of this product is that you could live in a mansion and its versatile design will still look great in the west wing of your personal library!

How does charging my phone with solar make a big difference?

Buying an at-home solar charger may not seem like a big step at first, but soon your friend will see it and want one. Then your family, then your coworkers…and so on. Before you know it, you’ve created a ripple effect that will inspire energy-saving habits for life. And it all started with you, my friend.

Next time you’re charging your phone with solar at the office, at a campground, or on the road in your newly renovated van, remember that you have the power to make a difference with your actions, but you also have the power to create something remarkable that will help others to start a new ripple effect! When we convince those around us to take little actions that make a difference, it all adds up to something big.
